Shop at The Friendshop

The Friendshop is a volunteer-run book and gift shop at the Main Library, which stocks:

  • Used books, most in mint condition and recently published
  • DVDs, Music CDs, Audiobooks
  • Unique gift items
  • Office supplies

Shop at Book Sales

Used book sales are held biannually to clear accumulated, unsold books; many at reduced prices. Sales are held in the Main Library Meeting Room. For more information, contact the Friendshop at (248) 232-2234. Upcoming sales:

April 2024
Friday, April 26: Friends Preview Sale, 7 – 9 PM
Saturday, April 27: 9 AM – 5 PM
Sunday, April 28: $5 Bag Sale, Noon – 3 PM


Donations are sold at book sales or in the Friendshop. Proceeds from sales are used to support the library through the Friends organization.

How to Donate Used Books and Media
Books and media can be placed individually in the brown Friends of the Library donation bin located near the Drive-Up Window on the west side of the Main Library. Library staff are unable to assist with unloading bags and boxes of donations.

Bags and boxes of books or media will not be accepted inside the Main Library, including the Friendshop. The donation bin will be locked and unavailable during the weekends of book sales due to a lack of storage space. The donation bin will be locked and unavailable for donations on holidays when the library is closed and during the week between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Bulk Book and Media Donations
If you have a large load of books or media to donate, please contact the Friends of the Library to set an appointment for them to assist you. A Friends volunteer will meet you at the Receiving Room door near the Drive-Up Window to receive your donations. To make an appointment, call the Friends at (248) 232-2222 and leave a message.

Donation receipts are available at the Drive-Up Window when the library is open. No donations of books or media are accepted at the Westacres Branch.

Donations especially needed:

  • Books published within the last five years, both fiction and non-fiction in good to excellent and salable condition (hardcover or paperback)
  • Children’s books
  • DVDs, Music CDs, Audiobooks
  • Attractive cookbooks, travel, nature and coffee table type books

Donations not accepted:

  • Books that have been improperly stored and are smelly, damp, dirty, torn or written in
  • Computer, health, or self-help books that are more than five years old
  • Magazines, newspapers, catalogs or academic journals
  • Video tapes and audio cassettes
  • Textbooks, medical or law books, academic monographs

Giving Tuesday Campaign

Thank you! Your generosity has helped raise an amazing $11,188 toward the launch of a collection of Playaway Kids Audiobooks as part of the Friends’ 2023 Giving Tuesday campaign. Keep an eye out for this collection to see it join the youth area.
